Summer is the perfect time to experiment with bold and vibrant colors in your sewing and crafting projects. This year, why not try incorporating some of the trending Afro-modern colors into your creations? These colors are not only beautiful and eye-catching, but they also celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the African continent.

As a child, I grew up amongst my grandparent's travel treasures. Much of it was from their time working in Northwest Africa. My grandfather, an iron-ore miner traveled to Liberia in the late 50s to help teach Liberian communities how to mine for themselves instead of allowing outside corporations to profit. They spent time there for a combined 12 years. Much of the decor in our rec room, when I was a child, was from their time there. Tapestries, furniture, and even a bird's nest which was weaved so uniquely to create a cornucopia shape. As my career in fashion developed, I was lucky to be able to travel several times to East Africa. I fell in love with their waxed Kitenge fabrics, the colors in the markets, and the terra cotta clay dirt under my feet. It makes me excited to see one of the trends in the fashion industry for this summer is paying honor and celebration to the vibrancy of a continent that means so much to my family and my personal fashion journey.

One of the hottest colors this season is mustard yellow. This warm and sunny shade pairs well with both neutral and bold colors, making it a versatile choice for any project. Consider using it as an accent color in a summer dress or as the primary color in a statement bag. You'll find this color was a part of our May 2023 Dye-Namic Fabric Kit™.

Another trending color is terra cotta, a warm earthy shade that adds depth and richness to any project. This color works particularly well in bohemian-inspired clothing and accessories, such as flowy maxi dresses, crochet tops, or woven purses.

For a bolder pop of color, consider incorporating shades of red, such as cherry or burgundy. These colors are perfect for adding drama and sophistication to your summer wardrobe. Try using them in a statement blouse or skirt or as an accent color. Our July 2023 Dye-Namic Fabric Kit™ boasts this bright shade of red as well!

Finally, don't forget about the power of green. Shades like olive and sage are perfect for adding a touch of nature to your summer sewing and crafting projects. These colors are particularly popular in sustainable and eco-friendly fashion, making them a great choice for those who want to make a statement while also being mindful of the environment.

In conclusion, using trending Afro-modern colors in your summer sewing and crafting projects is a great way to add a touch of culture and vibrancy to your creations. Whether you choose to incorporate mustard yellow, terra cotta, shades of red, or green, these colors are sure to make your projects stand out and be on-trend. So go ahead and experiment with these colors this summer, and see how they can elevate your sewing and crafting game!
